Explain your approach to wedding photography?
I will take great photos of your wedding, and you won?t even notice I am there. I will try not impose myself or take longer than necessary.
Why do you like shooting weddings?
A famous photographer once said; "I have to be a portrait photographer, landscape photographer, fashion photographer and photojournalist all within a few hours of a wedding day".
To me, photographing a wedding is not just another day at the office. I like to document each event and tell the real story of your wedding day.
What is your photographic style?
I practice photojournalism (also called documentary or reportage photography), which is "capturing" the image, not "creating" it. My objective is to tell the story of the wedding using the camera. I like to set up as few shots as possible, remaining unobtrusive. However, I will usually get in the midst of the fun at some points too. I like to photograph people, emotions, and the details of your wedding day. All you need to do for most of the day is to act naturally and enjoy being the centre of attention.
Would you call yourself a traditional photographer or a photojournalist?
Neither, I am a combination photographer, but secretly 51/49 in favour of being a photojournalist.
We want something contemporary but our parents want some traditional posed photos too. Can you do both?
Yes I can - I enjoy documentary style and informal portraits.
What is included in the wedding day?
Very simply I would normally cover the following - preparations at the bride's house, the groom and family at the ceremony beforehand, the guests arriving, the bride arriving, discrete shots of the ceremony (if permitted), the signing of the register, the couple leaving, group shots of the immediate families and a private moment with just the couple, shots at the reception including guests mingling, the cutting of the cake, the speeches, toasts and first dance. All shot with a little creative flair and an eye for the spontaneous moment.
What can I do with all the photos?
You can give your guests a copy of the photo with them in it when you send the thank you card for their gift.
Can I print the photos in black and white, sepia, with borders, in the shape of a love heart etc?
Yes, if you have a computer with even the basic photo suite software, your imagination is your limit.
What is the latest I can book you?
The day before your wedding, if I am available that is.
Do you use digital photography?
Yes, both my cameras are digital SLRs.
Can you work from a photo checklist I provide you?
Of course. I have many ideas for photos and a great eye for a shot, but sometimes to work with a checklist helps me to help you.
Do you have different lenses?
Yes, a traditional 18-200mm lens, a 300mm zoom lens and a wide angle lens.
What time will you begin and how long will you stay until?
I will start an hour before the ceremony and can meet you either at your house as you get ready or at the church. I usually stay until around 9PM and certainly after the first few dances.
How will you be dressed?
In my kilt, jacket and bow tie.
Do you process and develop your own prints?
No, I use a local photo lab.
Do you keep a copy of all the JPEGS?
Yes.
Are you a member of a professional association?
Yes, the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers.
Can you work within my budget?
Yes, I want to be part of your big day and give you plenty of memories to share for the rest of your life, so I can be flexible.
Do you require a deposit to secure the date?
Yes, 10% of the price.
Do you visit the location before the day?
Yes, I like to have a trial run, one less thing to worry about on the day.
What areas do you cover?
I can travel anywhere in Scotland, and beyond.
What has been your biggest wedding?
One of the first I photographed with over 300 guests.
What has been the smallest wedding?
I have done a wedding with only 15 guests. I took some of my best photos that day, it was very relaxed.
How long have you been a professional photographer for?
For almost seven years. I started off dong my friend's and relatives weddings and I did such a good job they all encouraged me to do it professionally.
Have you any qualifications relating to photography?
I have a Licentiate from the Society of Wedding Photographers, a Licentiate from the British Professional Photographers Association, a Craftsman member of the Guild of Wedding Photographers.
Are you easy to work with?
I am very relaxed and never allow myself to get stressed. You will be smiling all day. You will be spending all day with me so it is important that are personalities do not clash.
Can you make my day even more special?
Of course, when you think about your wedding day, you will always think back how professional and relaxed your photographer was.
My auntie may want a photo of her family whom she has not seen in ten years, would this be a problem?
Of course not. What better time to take a family photo than when the family are all dressed up, smiling and relaxed. As long as it doesn't distract me from my main duties.
Would you expect to be provided with a meal on the day?
I have only been to one wedding where I have not been included in the actual wedding meal, and that was because I was only booked for half a day. If I have a seat at a table, it is in my best interests to follow the schedule, and not waste time, because I will be hungry also!
Do you do bridal and engagement portraits?
Yes, but I suggest booking this at least two months before the big day.
Why do you offer one of the best deals online and give away all your photos?
There is no catch. I love what I do, I am not greedy and the look on the bride's face when she sees all the photos she has for the rest of your life, that is worth £1,000,000.
Have you had any complaints from previous clients?
None.
So seriously, do I get to keep every photo you take?
It is your wedding, your memories, your friends and family, why would I want to keep your photos?
Can I reproduce any image myself on my home computer without having to pay you, even though you own the copyright?
Yes, as long as they are for personal use. Sure I could make more money from reprints, but I want to be known as the first professional photographer EVER to give away all his work, and the first to give the bride and groom permission to copy anything for FREE.
Just to confirm, can I make reprints from the photos you give me, I do not have to pay you any more money?
You can take the CD down to Boots or Morrisons and pay what everyone else would pay. I can provide prints from this website if you wanted also.
How do I contact you?
You can email me at john@YouKeepEveryPhoto.com or phone me on 0800 3 118 121.
Can you come and visit me at my house?
Yes, at a time that suits you.
How much do you charge, honestly?
I charge £1,250 and that is for a full day and for every photo supplied on a DVD.
But honestly, what are the hidden charges?
If you do not know me by the end of this question and answer session, read them again. There are NO hidden charges, there will never be any hidden charges, and yes, you can believe your luck.
